Horsehair is an incredible material. You might not know it is used in a variety of products to increase comfort and durability. That’s partly because it’s used only in the most luxurious products. But that doesn’t mean it is unaffordable.
Ely mattresses are made using all natural materials, including horsehair, and they are available to buy for a very reasonable price. They’re made even more costworthy by the fact that horsehair and our other materials – wool and cotton – are durable, and therefore last a long time. In fact, Ely mattresses come with a ten year warranty.
Horsehair in mattresses is typically blended with other products, such as wool or cotton. The more horsehair used, the more supportive the mattress will be, because horsehair is an incredibly strong product and increases the sturdiness of any material it is blended to make.
If the ratio is higher parts wool to horsehair, then the mattress will be softer.
Like most other manufacturers using horsehair, Ely uses horsehair as a bridge, which means we offer mattresses that are supportive but incredibly comfortable.
Because horsehair is naturally durable, it doesn’t lose its shape as easily as some manufactured products do over time, which means your mattress won’t collapse in the same way as others do. You can sleep on it as long as you want, but there is barely anything that can reduce its key components, even prolonged exposure to weight. That means your mattress will last longer if it is made with horsehair than it will if this amazing natural material is not included.
Aside from being durable, horsehair is also naturally hypoallergenic, which means it is perfect for people who sneeze and stream their way through life.
It’s naturally fire resistant, which means we don’t need to add any nasty chemicals to your mattress in order to make it safe to sleep on.
Horsehair is breathable, which means it wicks away moisture. This is incredibly important in mattresses, because lots of us sweat when we sleep. Mattresses made with horsehair are less likely to become damp and mouldy because the sweat is taken away immediately and does not settle within the fibres.
Finally, horsehair is comfortable. That’s because the hair acts like a tiny spring, and those springs do not compress and warp the way manufactured springs do. This means your mattress will stay bouncy for longer.
Whether this is true or not kind of depends on your beliefs. If you’re vegan, you won’t buy a horsehair mattress on the basis you do not believe that animals should be used in the manufacture of any product at all, even if the extraction of it does not hurt the animal.
But if you are not vegan and therefore you are happy to buy products that contain wool, for example, then you’ll be happy to hear that no harm is caused to horses to use their hair. Horses are not farmed, and their hair is bought at the end of their lives as a by-product. Ideally, horsehair would be given through the shedding and grooming process, but the animals do not produce enough to sustain the industry during their lifetimes. Instead, their hair, as well as their skin and other parts of their bodies, are recycled and used elsewhere.
This might sound harsh or alarming because horses are often considered pets, but this is really no different from many of the animal practices most of us participate in on a daily basis, including eating meat or drinking dairy, and using leather.
Horsehair and horsetail are similar in their makeup, but they should not be confused. Horsetail is a longer, more superior product, and therefore it is usually much more expensive for manufacturers to purchase. That cost is typically passed on to you.
Horsehair is exactly the same, but it is shorter.
Horsehair and horsetail are not only graded by their quality, but also on their colour, with white horsetail ranked as the most expensive.
Some people are allergic to horsehair. If this is the case for you, don’t worry! We still have you covered. Drop us a message in the notes section when you order your mattress and we will produce it without the use of horsehair, so you get all the benefits of an Ely mattress without the reaction.
