There are two types of people; those who keep their bedroom perfectly neat and tidy, and those who store all their clothes in chaotic piles across the room and items strewn across the floor. Actually, there’s definitely an in between too.
If you’re someone who aspires to a serene sanctuary of a bedroom, but often finds themselves kept awake at night by the thought of the clutter under their bed, we can help. Why wait until spring for a big clear out? Start out 2023 the right way, and easily declutter the bedroom this January with these top tips!
Some people can handle a bit of clutter. But, whilst they may say it doesn’t bother them, a messy bedroom could actually be worsening their sleep. According to some studies, people with cluttered bedrooms can take longer to fall asleep. This leads to tiredness, which decreases the likelihood of that bedroom being tidied. It’s a nasty cycle to fall into.
Hoarders also particularly struggle in this respect. Dr Pamela Thacher, a psychologist at New York’s St Lawrence University, states: “Hoarders typically have problems with decision-making and executive function; poor sleep is known to compromise cognition generally.”
Keeping items in your bedroom that are linked to work, study, or exercise can also make sleep more challenging. Your brain should associate your bedroom with relaxation and rest, rather than strenuous effort or high levels of concentration.
At Ely Mattress, we know how important a good night’s sleep is. We also know how daunting it can be to tidy a very cluttered bedroom. Here are our favourite ways to make decluttering the bedroom easier.
Depending on how messy your bedroom is (no judgement here), you should start by getting rid of any rubbish. The stuff that belongs in the bin needs to go in there ASAP. Things like bits of paper or wrappers, coffee cups or takeaway containers can all go.
If you have food lying around, definitely chuck this away first. Any mould that may have developed can be detrimental to your health, affecting the air quality of your sleep environment.
Go Big
When embarking on many mammoth tasks, a lot of advice is to take small steps.
Not today.
The easiest way to begin decluttering is by removing the larger objects first. If you’ve got too much furniture (who needs three wardrobes?), freeing up a lot of space by clearing this first will make things easier next.
Maybe you moved in recently, and still haven’t unpacked all the boxes. Perfect. Take these boxes out of the bedroom and out of the way – you can comb through their contents later.
Now your bedroom is free of rubbish and larger items, it’s time to zone in more closely. It’s easy for your bedside table to become cluttered. Piles of books, empty glasses, tissues, jewellery.
Anything finished with, or not needed on a daily basis, should be stored away somewhere else.
The best way to keep on top of your clothes is to regularly declutter your wardrobe. But, if you’ve let things get a little out of hand, tackle your chest of drawers with a ruthless attitude.
Identify why you might be hanging onto old clothes from your teenage years. An old dress might make you feel linked to a lost love, or a shirt could remind you of the best party of your life. That’s fine, but wouldn’t it be great for new memories to be made in those by someone else? If you haven’t worn something for six months, put it in the donation pile. Reselling clothes can be a good idea, but it means you’re often left with piles of clothes still cluttering up your bedroom.
A selfless act like giving away unworn and no longer enjoyed clothes can make you feel great, whilst freeing up precious wardrobe space.
Once you’ve cleared out old clothes, piling up rubbish, and unnecessary furniture, it’s time to really clean. With new space to reach tricky place, you can wipe down every surface, from the skirting boards to the top of the window frame. Dust down light fixtures and clean curtains or blinds for a more restful space.
Using natural cleaning products with fresh scents like zesty lemon or citrusy smells will promote freshness in your bedroom. This step is crucial, trust us. Your old cluttered bedroom will feel brand-new, and like the perfect space for true relaxation.
