Buying a new mattress is a substantial financial investment but taken well care of, and the mattress can last you a good ten years. That is why it is vital to take specific care of your mattress to extend the lifespan and reduce wear and tear.
Whether you add a cover or clean your mattress, a little TLC can go a long way in keeping your mattress in good shape for years to come.
After you’ve invested in a good mattress, you’re likely to expect it to provide a comfortable sleep for many years. A typical mattress is intended to last anywhere from five to ten years or more, though, how it is preserved can shorten or lengthen your bed’s lifespan.
Here, we round up some excellent ways of protecting that investment and saving money in the long run.
A mattress protector might be the most important accessory to have for your mattress. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what a mattress protector actually does though.
Mattress protectors fit over the top of your mattress and often you tuck the stretchy sides under the mattress to stop it from moving. They can be made from an assortment of materials, both natural and synthetic. These include cotton, polyester, latex, and bamboo. Water resistant and water proof mattress covers are made from materials like vinyl or plastic.
A mattress protector has four main functions when placed on a mattress:

If you really want to expand the life of your mattress then we recommend that you purchase a mattress that contains no foam. Foam generally has a lifespan of around 2–5 years depending on the quality. It will start to change in the main sleeping areas no matter how much you rotate and flip it. (Plus, most foam mattresses cannot be flipped)
Choose natural materials that are easy to rejuvenate back to their natural state if they get compressed. The Ely Mattress is made from 100% natural materials. We recommend you rotate and flip the Ely Mattress regularly to help expand it’s lifespan.
Our bodies perspire at night, and often human bodies continually produce body oil, which can rub off on your sheets and seep into the mattress, making yellowing marks where you sleep the most. Ensure you wash your sheets at least once a week and change the bedding to keep your mattress smelling and looking fresh.
We all remember jumping on the bed as a child and having the time of our lives, but did you know jumping on any mattress will shorten its lifespan? An innerspring mattress works by having hundreds of springs inside that push upward against your body when you sleep. But when you jump on it, the springs strain, and your next sleep might not be as comfortable as before. Those springs last around 10 years, depending on the mattress’ quality, but again, if you use it as a trampoline then those 10 years will be reduced to fewer years of comfort.
Bearing in mind, some mattresses cannot be flipped nor rotated, it’s always a good idea to purchase one that can do both, because you will no doubt, expand the years you get out of your investment if it allows you to use all of it.
As the weight of your body puts pressure on the internal assembly of your mattress, these structures can become compressed over time and if you do not give them a chance to restore themselves then it can mean one part of your mattress will sag.
By rotating or flipping your mattress habitually, you will distribute your weight more consistently over time, giving the internal structure a chance to revive.
You don’t have to purchase a new bed base with every new mattress, but it’s important to know how to best support your brand-new mattress. Mattress manufacturers and consumers have better understanding now that a mattress and a base both affect each other. A good mattress on a good base will feel wonderfully comfortable and will last longer which is why it is important to make sure your mattress does have the right kind of support.
Mattresses can, over time, collect a load of dead skin cells, sweat, stains, dust mites, crumbs and all types of other particles. Regardless of linens and mattress protectors, you still need to periodically clean the thing you sleep on every night—at least once every six months if you sleep on it every day.
