The unfortunate reality is that every mattress that has served you well over the years reaches its end. The general consensus is that you should replace your mattress every 10 years but – according to recent studies from the Sleep Council – you should in fact swap it out every 6 to 8 years.

It isn’t surprising they would say this, as they have links to beds. They’re the consumer education arm of the National Bed Federation, who are a trade association for British bed manufacturers.

But, whether you believe their advice or not, your mattress should be replaced when it is old. The better quality your mattress is, the longer it takes it to age.

Naturally, manufacturers of mattresses want you to purchase more mattresses, as they make money when you do.

So, to start, we would ask that you make sure now is absolutely the right time to buy a new mattress in the first place. If environmental consciousness is your issue, that’s the first question you should ask.

How do I know it is time to change my mattress?

If your mattress has exceeded the manufacturer’s specified lifespan, it’s probably time to let go. However, don’t take this as verbatim. Perhaps you bought your mattress ten years ago and hardly ever sleep on it, or maybe you’re single and only sleep on one side. There are individual circumstances that might enhance the lifespan of your mattress, meaning it isn;t time to recycle it yet.

Some signs you definitely need to replace your mattress include:

• Asthma or allergies begin to get worse
• Tears or rips impacting the build
• Being able to feel the springs
