It’s getting cold. Really, really cold. If you’re anything like us, you’re leaving the comfort of the living room and bounding to the bedroom to jump between the sheets to try to warm up.
As the temperature plummets through the night, you’re relying on your bed to keep you nice and warm. Perhaps you have invested in a thick duvet and some special sheets to keep you nice and cozy.
But what about your mattress? How is that contributing to keeping you warm? And what about when summer rolls around? How can a mattress that keeps you warm in winter also keep you cool in summer?
Have you ever seen a cold sheep? No, neither have we. Sheep are outside in all weathers because their wool regulates their temperature and keeps them warm even when it is freezing outside.
We use wool from the Dorset Horn, a sheep imported from Australia in 1891. It’s wool is of exceptional high quality. It is dense, containing short fibres that are springy to touch. It’s viewed as a high quality material and we use it within our mattresses because it is also comfortable and durable.
Wool dissipates moisture to insulate the body, so when you sweat you won’t find yourself lying in damp. That’s important. Wool also encloses warm air to keep you snug. It effectively helps you heat up by trapping your own body heat, keeping you warm when the temperature outside the duvet is chilly and uncomfortable.
Summer feels far away, but it will roll around before you know it. We’ll be back to worrying about sticky nights and sweaty bed sheets in next to no time.
Summer is an issue for mattresses because we sweat when we sleep. If there is no way of regulating that then we end up sleeping in damp, which is uncomfortable, smelly, and ruins our mattresses. Sweat is also an issue because it is a breeding ground for mould and dust mites, which can impact your health.
Ely mattresses are porous and breathable, which means they allow air to pass through the fibres and wick away any moisture before it becomes an issue, keeping you dry and cool.
Ely mattresses are made from wool, cotton and horsehair, which support your body without conforming to it in the way foam does, as this causes your underlying body temperature to increase.
Instead of using foam, we use horsehair and wool for their springiness, and cotton for its breathability. Cotton is a really wonderful material, and there is a reason it is used for clothing, bed sheets and towels.
Until the industrial revolution, cotton was the key ingredient in mattresses, but the development of cheaper, man-made products chased that away. Now, we’re bringing back the best of what mother nature has to offer.
You might think we’re just tooting our own horn, but the UK Sleep Council is quoted as saying:
“Natural fibres, such as horsehair, wool, cotton and down are best if you get hot at night. Synthetic memory foam can become hot and may not absorb moisture efficiently so look for products that combat this if it’s an issue.”
And nobody knows sleep like the UK Sleep Council.
There are no unnatural materials in Ely mattresses, so you’re not going to find any unwanted nasties.
We chose our three core materials for a number of reasons besides their ability to regulate your temperature.
All three are durable, so our mattresses are going to last longer than those made from unnatural materials. They’re hypoallergenic, so they are great for people who cough and sneeze their way through life.
Because they’re natural materials they are also naturally fire retardant, which means we haven’t had to add any nasty chemicals to make them safe to sleep on.
Ely mattresses are not only great to sleep on, they also come with a thirty day sleep trial so that you’re absolutely sure it’s what you want before you commit.
We also offer interest free finance so that you can spread the cost, and we’ll take away and recycle your old mattress so that you can be sure that it isn’t just your future that is environmentally friendly, but your past, too.
Our mattresses are available from baby to emperor size, so there’s an Ely mattress for everyone in your family.
We also sell an amazing Ely mattress protector to prolong the life of your new asset, which already comes with a minimum five year warranty.
