We can all ship products from China or other overseas countries, but we know that the people who harvest these materials are often overworked and underpaid. We don’t want to feel like anyone who helped us make our amazing products was in any way part of modern day slavery and we don’t want hundreds of workers earning low wages whilst the CEO of the company we buy materials from is made rich. That’s why we buy our materials locally and for a fair price. The cotton, wool and horsehair we use is locally sourced and we pay a decent amount for it

That means we charge a little more, but you can buy an Ely mattress safe in the knowledge we haven’t exploited anyone along the way.

Are natural materials worth the money?

We’d have to say absolutely yes. Perhaps you’re thinking ‘you would say that’, but allow us to explain why we think natural materials are well worth the price.

• They’re safe. Natural materials are free from toxic materials like glue and foam, which can cause issues like infertility, breathing problems, and even cancer.
• They’re breathable. Natural materials allow air to circulate, which means they wick away moisture and keep you dry, even if you are a sweaty sleeper.
• They regulate your temperature. Natural materials, especially the type of wool we use, lock in your body heat when the temperature is low to keep you snug and warm.
• They’re naturally fire retardant. Because natural materials are the best mother nature has to offer, they are naturally resistant to fire. That’s important. If there was a fire when you were in bed, the last thing you want is a flammable bed. Most mattress manufacturers spray their mattresses with chemicals to make them safe and compliant, but who wants to sleep on chemicals? Natural materials don’t need spraying with harsh chemicals, because they repel fire on their own.
• They’re naturally hypoallergenic. Because natural materials are breathable and wick away moisture, that means they don’t trap dust or grow mould, which means they are perfect for someone who coughs and sneezes their way through life.
