Is it true? A natural mattress is better for you? Since the invention of the internet, we’ve had the luxury of being able to easily purchase any item we choose. We can spend hours looking for the products we want to buy, researching how long our delivery might take, how much it costs, and customer reviews.
It’s opened up a whole world of opportunity and it means that there’s more competition for retailers and prices are more competitive. You, as a consumer, have the whole retail world on your doorstep.
That might sound dandy, but there are downsides to it. If there are millions of brands and products, how do you know who the good ones are? Sure, there are customer reviews, but how do you know that they’re real? How can you be sure that the customers were not misled or unlearned? Can you be certain that what you read is true?
We care because we’re a reputable natural mattress provider and we have to fight a tonne of competition from other mattress providers, good and bad. The internet is a wonderful invention and it means that we can showcase our mattresses to millions of people, but it also means that we have to fight to prove that we’re reputable, because there are so many people who claim that they do what we do.
At Ely Mattresses, we only sell natural mattresses. We happen to think that makes us better than some of the other mattress companies. That’s because we believe that mattresses made from natural materials are better for your health, and there is nothing more important to any of us than our health, right?
You spend a lot of time in bed. If you get the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night, you’ll spend a third of your life on a mattress. That’s a lot of time in close proximity to something someone else made for you.
You might not have given much thought to your mattress and what it’s made from, but you should. Mattresses can sometimes contain chemicals that might be harmful to you, such as fire retardant chemicals. Some mattresses, including memory foam mattresses, go through a process called off-gassing, which happens when volatile organic chemicals used in the manufacturing process leave the material and emit a funny smell.
Mattresses made from natural materials tend to have natural fire resistant properties, and so they don’t need additional chemicals to make them safe. They also tend to be breathable and that means they’re less likely to harbour moisture and sweat, which turns to mould. They have the added benefit of keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Plus, they’re usually dust mite repellent, which means you’re less likely to get sick if you have allergies
The world is a bursting hub of natural resources. There’s no need for gassy mattresses.
We use wool, cotton and horse hair in our mattresses. These natural materials work well together when combined and built into a mattress. It means that we can make the amazing claim that our mattresses are made from natural materials, which is not something you find in your average mattress store.
The wool we use is springy to the touch and of premium quality. It’s breathable, odour resistant, and fire resistant. It dissipates moisture and insulates, which means it works well with your body temperature to sustain it at a neutral level.
Cotton is a fantastic product for mattresses, but it’s hardly ever used anymore because it’s not as cheap as some other products. We don’t favour cheap, we favour long lasting and high quality.
And hose hair? Horse hair is hollow, which means it is ideal for moisture wicking, drying almost immediately. It gives the effect of sleeping on millions of tiny springs.
Yes, actually. Natural mattresses are easy to recycle. With landfills at capacity and a looming climate crisis, that has never been more important.
We know you have a busy life, but it is really important that you take the time to research the type of mattress you want. Don’t look for the fastest deliverer or the cheapest brand. Mattresses should last you ten years or more and you’ll be spending a third of every day in your bed. Make sure you’re spending that time resting on a product that was produced with care and eco-consciousness.
Ely mattresses are handmade in the UK, so there’s no nasty carbon footprint to consider, and they’re fully recyclable and biodegradable. We’re so sure that you’ll receive a durable, comfortable mattress, that every purchase comes with a ten year warranty.
