Why aren’t most modern mattresses made to flip over anymore?
Do you remember the good old days when your mattress could be flipped over and hence the life cycle of the mattress really did last almost ten years or more?
Nowadays, more and more mattress makers are telling the consumer that their mattress cannot be flipped – but why is this?
The short answer is to save money. Not having a flippable mattress saves money for the manufacturer and usually that is why they can offer their mattresses at a competitive price and make a much larger profit. In this blog, we explore this in more detail.
The manufacturer saves money
The construction of a flippable mattresses requires that both sides of the mattress are mirror images of one another. If a mattress cannot be flipped then the manufacturer can save money by putting less expensive cushions, covering and quilting on the bottom side. Because of this you have a mattress with better quality filling on the top than the bottom.
However, at Ely, we decided to keep the traditional method of not cutting any corners and keeping twice the amount of luxurious filling so the Ely Mattress can, in fact, be flipped and rotated to ensure longevity.
Often you will find that the cheaper alternatives that come in a box cannot be flipped and usually break down quicker as they use less expensive polyurethane foam (polyfoam) on the bottom. Polyfoam is blown petroleum that sticks together and is the least expensive and lowest quality foam used in many modern mattresses.
